Mustang, once an independent kingdom, has deep historical and cultural ties to Tibet. From the 15th to the 17th century, its strategic location allowed it to control trade routes between the Himalayas and India. In 1795 Mustang was annexed by Nepal and officially became a province of the Kingdom of Nepal.
Although the monarchy remained an important cultural institution for the people, it was officially abolished by the Nepalese government on October 7, 2008. The last king, Jigme Dorje Palbar Bista (1930–2016), traced his ancestry directly to Ame Pal, the warrior who established the Buddhist kingdom of Mustang in 1380 and the Kingdom has retained much of its original appearance over the centuries.
In 2015 I along with two friends took a three trek through Mustang. These are some of the images are from that trip.
